DZFE TRANSMITTER PROJECT

DZFE reaches a milestone in its transmitter project: The station is slated to begin broadcasting from its new transmitter, April 1.

With the commissioning of the Nautel transmitter, the Php11.5M effort to improve DZFE's signal coverage of Metro Manila comes close to completion. Adjustments are ongoing. Reception in the Greater Manila Area should noticeably improve with the increase of power from the 1kW of the past several months, to 10kW. The station will subsequently be applying for NTC permission to transmit at the desired 15 kilowatts of power.

The odyssey towards better signal coverage of the Metro Manila area began in the early 90s. Since 1954, DZFE’s transmitting site and studios had been located at the FEBC Compound in Karuhatan, Valenzuela.

Wishing to move closer to our listeners in the business districts of the city, we were delighted when we were offered prime space atop what was (then) to be the tallest building in the Ortigas business district. While construction began, the studio and transmitting site were transferred to Makati in 1997 — a stopover, as far as we were concerned.

With the Asian economic crisis, development of the building was abruptly terminated, hindering our own development of the site. DZFE remained in Makati, transmitting at 20kW from the Penthouse of Cityland 10 Tower 1

By 2002, new skyscrapers twice the height of Cityland 10 had surrounded the building, obstructing DZFE’s signal. Interference complaints from surrounding offices compelled a halving of transmitting power.

It became imperative for DZFE to move its transmitting site out of Makati. Fundraising for the move took three years. In April of 2005, leaving its by-now unreliable 20kW transmitter behind, DZFE began transmitting from its current site in Antipolo on a leased 5kW transmitter.

Not long after, the leased transmitter itself began to perform erratically. It became apparent that we would need to invest in a new transmitting array. Fundraising for a new transmitter and a suitable antenna began in September of 2006.

Currently, the greater part of the Php11.5M funding goal has been reached.

If you wish to help fund this project, here are the options by which you can send donations to DZFE.
