Italian violinist Uto Ughi at CCP

Italian violinist Uto Ughi performs at the CCP as part of salutatory events mounted by the new Ambassador of Italy to the Philippines Luca Fornari and his wife. Ughi and pianist Alessandro Specchi will perform the Sonata in A major, Op. 37 “Kreutzer” of Beethoven; the Fantasia on themes from Faust by Henryk Wieniawski, Op. 20; the etude “La Campanella” by Paganini, and the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Camille Saint-Saens.

The concert is open to the public; reservation is required. Attire is formal. Tickets are available through the CCP Marketing Office, 832-1125 loc. 1800. A formal dress code is applied.

New PPO director debuts

The new music director of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra makes his debut in the final concert of the season. After a protracted selection process, the baton has passed to 30-year-old French-born American conductor Olivier Ochanine, who trained as a flutist before pursuing studies in orchestral conducting.

1st Philippine International Guitar Festival

For the first time in the Philippines, disciples of the guitar gather as one. Pedagogue and performer Jose Valdez is director of the Festival.

The roster of festival performers will include Steve Lin, Michael Dadap, Perfecto de Castro, Sixto Roxas, and Florante Aguilar. Groups include the Kasilag Guitar Trio, Tabs, UP Guitar Orchestra, and winners of the NAMCYA 2009 Guitar Category. The festival will also feature the Fundacion Centro Flamenco.

Master classes and lectures will be offered on a variety of topics. Talks include:
Building a Performing Career
Flamenco
A Guitarist’s Pain
Jazz Improvisation
Ensemble Playing
Musicality, Intelligence and Technique

The Festival will also feature booths and displays by luthiers and guitar manufacturers.

Awit ng Gabi for Ondoy victims

The second to the last concert of the GSIS Thursday Concert Series 2009 is an Ondoy fundraiser entitled Awit ng Gabi, and features the talents of Ana Feleo (soprano), Joy Abalon Tamayo (soprano), Dondi Ong (tenor), Marvin Gayramon (baritone), and Philip Mabunga (pianist).

Admission is free. The concert venue is the GSIS Museum at the second floor of the GSIS Central Office, Macapagal Ave., Financial Center, Pasay City.

Living Fil-Chinese composer Huang turns 100: Tribute concert at CCP

Chinese International School Manila presents A Century of Service to Music featuring Filipino-Chinese composer Huang Chen-Mou, who celebrates his 100th birthday this year. The concert, conducted by Celia Yu Ong, is Saturday, October 31, 8 PM, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo.

Featured works are the Piano Concerto, songs for tenor and soprano solos, an excerpt from the opera China Soul, and the cantata Emmanuel, Huang’s most published and admired work, on the birth of Christ. Huang Chen Mou’s first composition was written in his teen years, and was published by the Shanghai Opera House. He went on to write the operas such as Kublai Khan and compositions for piano and orchestra like the Chinese Fantasia in B flat.

Celia Yu Ong was the music director of the Echoettes and the Makati Hope Christian Academy. She she made her debut as the conductor of the joint choir of 14 choruses and a 58-piece orchestra in the Tiananmen Memorial Concert at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. In December 1997, she was acclaimed for her performance at Carnegie Hall, where she conducted a combined choir of international ensembles in Mozart’s Requiem.

A Century of Service to Music, featuring a 200-voice mixed choir and a 140-voice children’s choir made up of Filipino-Chinese singers —October 31, Saturday, at the CCP. Admission is free.

Lisa@25 is the production marking prima ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde’s 25th anniversary in professional dance.

The two-hour production showcases highlights from the ballerina’s career, including never-before-seen footage of her performances in Russia, videos and still photographs taken during provincial tours. For the first time in a ballet production, a colossal Watch Out screen is being used, allowing Macuja-Elizalde and other dancers to interact with images projected on it.

Macuja was the first Filipino and foreigner to be invited to join the famed Kirov Ballet in 1984, after she graduated at the top of her class from the Leningrad Choreographic Institute.

Partial proceeds of Lisa@25 will be earmarked for Typhoon Ondoy flood victims.
