UP Alumni in “100 Years of Classical Music”

The UP Alumni Association presents 100 Years of Classical Music, a UP University Theater production highlighting UP National Artists’ music, as well as the achievements of Ms. Evelyn Mandac and Mr. Noel Velasco, singers who have gained ample international recognition in the world of grand opera.

Other performers include UP choral groups such as the Philippine Madrigal Singers, UP Concert Chorus and UP Singing Ambassadors; singers Noly Cabahug, Frankie Asiniero, Aileen Cura, Dondi Ong, and Jonathan Badon; instrumentalists Joseph Esmilla, Lester Demetillo and Sonny Yangco.

Russian pianist Katya Grineva at the CCP

Steinway artist, pianist Katya Grineva presents romantic piano music in a solo recital at the CCP. The program includes Liszt’s Schubert song transcriptions, and favorites by Chopin.

“From Russia with Love” features the special participation of soprano Joanna Go.

The concert is presented by the FOFI Foundation for the benefit of retired soldiers and their dependents of Camp O’ Donnell in Capas, Tarlac.

10th San Agustin Music Festival honors Urdaneta

The Philippines’ World Heritage Site, San Agustin Church, a rich repository of historical, sacred artifacts will stage its 10th San Agustin International Music Festival to celebrate culture, history and the life works of Fray Andrés de Urdaneta, scientist and navigator of the 15h century who, unknown to many, was instrumental in the expansion of the Christian faith in the Philippines.

“Music lovers will find delight in this unique experience of appreciating sacred, classical music with our guest musicians, Spanish organist Joxe Benantzi Bilbao and Spanish tenor, José María Berenguer, with the College of the Immaculate Conception Chorale of Cabanatuan City, Chiang Kai Shek Youth Choir, the Philippine Women’s University Chorale, PPO Principal trumpeter, Fredeline Parin and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra,” stated Fr. Pedro G. Galende, OSA, director of San Agustin Museum and President of the Urdaneta 500 Philippine Commission.

Visitors will also have the rare opportunity to listen to the music of the Pipe Organ of San Agustin Church, the biggest baroque Spanish organ in the Philippines which dates back from the 18th century.

H.E. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, upon the recommendation of Hon. Cecile Guidote Alvarez, executive director of NCCA, declares the year 2008 as “The Year of Urdaneta.”
