Choral workshop with Neo Nocturne

This two part event—lecture and performance proper—aims to promote choral performance, educate enthusiasts/choristers and share the discipline and practice of music by some of the best choirs in the country.

Lectures will cover various topics. Two choirs shall be featured in the afternoon and the remaining two choirs will have its turn in the evening.

1st Philippine International Guitar Festival

For the first time in the Philippines, disciples of the guitar gather as one. Pedagogue and performer Jose Valdez is director of the Festival.

The roster of festival performers will include Steve Lin, Michael Dadap, Perfecto de Castro, Sixto Roxas, and Florante Aguilar. Groups include the Kasilag Guitar Trio, Tabs, UP Guitar Orchestra, and winners of the NAMCYA 2009 Guitar Category. The festival will also feature the Fundacion Centro Flamenco.

Master classes and lectures will be offered on a variety of topics. Talks include:
Building a Performing Career
Flamenco
A Guitarist’s Pain
Jazz Improvisation
Ensemble Playing
Musicality, Intelligence and Technique

The Festival will also feature booths and displays by luthiers and guitar manufacturers.

The Philippine Flute Society welcomes one of Canada’s leading flutists Robert Aitken, who performs with pianist Cristine Coyiuto, her daughter, flutist Caitlin Alisa, together with the leading premiere area flutists, Enrique Barcelo, Francisco Candelaria, David Jerome Johnson, Antonio Maigue, Marie Poblete, Raymundo Sison and Santiago Yangco, as participants in this fascinating concert.

Mr. Ringo Chan, Director of the Hong Kong Flute Centre will conduct the Philippine Flute Society Flute Orchestra, a 30-member Flute Orchestra comprising young talented Flutists from all the major Universities in the Metro Manila area.

The program will include works by Robert Aitken, Johann Sebastian Bach, Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach, Franz Doppler, Georges Adolphe Hue, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Sergei Prokofiev, in arrangements for flute and piano, two flutes and piano and also several large works arranged for the flute Orchestra with flute solo.

An internationally reputed champion for both classical and contemporary music, Robert Aitken has been described as “Canadian Musician Extraordinaire, one of Canada’s leading flutists, one with impeccable taste and extraordinary abilities to define and mold musical concepts” (Canada Music). His flute studies were with notable teachers Nicolas Fiore, Marcel Moyse, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Andre Jaunet, Severino Gazzelloni and Hubert Barwahser. He has collaborated with Pierre Boulez, Kazuo Fukushima, Heinz Holliger and Toru Takemitsu.

At age 70, he is still actively teaching and concertizing globally, premiering and recording new and old works such as by noted composers as John Cage, George Crumb, Elliot Carter and Henry Brant. He received the National Flute Association 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award, Order of Canada and Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France).

A Flute Workshop with Robert Aitken is slated for October 27, Tuesday afternoon at the Coyiuto House. Anyone interested in flute techniques, warm up exercises and all things pertaining to the flute is welcome.

MGC New Life Choral Workshop this May

This summer, MGC New Life Christian Academy presents a choral singing workshop entitled TO HIM WE SING.

This will be handled by the much sought-after conductor, composer and pedagogue Eudenice Palaruan. Mr. Palaruan is Choral Conducting Professor at the University of the Philippines College of Music, music director of Union Church of Manila, and was formerly the principal conductor of the San Miguel Master Chorale.

Along with the workshop, there will be lectures by Evelyn Martha Uy, Dr. Rebecca Feliciano and Beverly Shangkuan, on various aspects of music ministry, as well as proper voice care.

Choral music lecture at UCM with UE, UV chorale

The University of the East and University of Visayas Chorale under Anna Paquero will perform a program of sacred music for the Union Church of Manila Chancel Choir at the UCM Mini Sanctuary.

This is a pre-concert recital for the two choirs before their main concert on Friday at Philamlife as well as a demonstration for the UCM Chancel Choir. UCM choir director, Eudenice Palaruan, will be annotating the program for the audience.

While the concert-lecture is an intimate affair, UCM has graciously opened it to the public; choir music professionals and enthusiasts, in particular, are invited.

In conjunction with the concert The French Connection with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (April 17, Friday 800PM) conductor Michaël Cousteau will render a special lecture with reference to the profession of a conductor.

“The Conductor: What is he for?” Through archival and audio testimonials of renowned 20th century music maestros, Michaël Cousteau will reveal the secrets of the profession, object of fantasies and questionings.

Chancel Repertory Theatre kicks off its summer workshop, The Stage Awaits You 2009.

The workshop for children ages 5 and up is on its 10th year. From April 13 to May 6, participants will learn to sing, dance and act original American musicals, culminating in two evening shows at Music Museum in Greenhills.

Workshop instructors include Enchang Agudo Kaimo, Jaime del Mundo, and Paolo O’Hara. Each class will have instructors for acting, voice & dance lessons plus 2 teaching assistants. Class size is strictly limited to 25 students achieving an ideal teacher-student ratio of 1:5.

The Stage Awaits You seeks to discover artistic talents of youth and children, while nurturing them with foundational moral values.
