<p>American pianist <strong>Roberta Rust</strong> again promises Manila concertgoers a delightful piano recital, a welcome respite from the usual local piano program fare. <strong>Gershwin</strong> and <strong>Joplin</strong> flank new names, <strong>John Sharpley, Michael Anderson, George Rochberg</strong>, and a few familiar figures from the Old World—<strong>Johann Christian Bach</strong>, <strong>Haydn</strong> and <strong>Schubert.</strong></p>
<p>Roberta Rust has taught several Filipino pianists, including Jonathan Coo, Victor Asuncion, Ross Salvosa, Darren Matias, and Oliver Salonga.</p>

<p>Filipino-American tenor <strong>Arthur Espiritu </strong>debuts in the Philippines in <strong>Viva bel Canto</strong>, a concert of bel canto gems with soprano <strong>Rachelle Gerodias</strong>, and piansit <strong>Najib Ismail</strong>. </p>
<p>Rachelle, whose sterling singing is well known to the Philippine public, will find a perfect match in Arthur, who has been called a singer with a &#8220;beautiful legato”, “a regal tenor”. His career to date has included important assignments in Europe and the United States.  In Europe he has performed with the Accademia of Teatro alla Scala, Piccolo Teatro di Milano and Opera Fuoco, and he looks forward to principal role debuts with Theatre St. Gallen in Switzerland in the 2009-2010 season.</p>

<p>The <strong>Metro Manila Concert Orchestra </strong>opens its Tenth Season with an anniversary concert, <strong>Chasing Barlines</strong>. The event combines the celebration with the grand launching of <strong>Koro Filipino</strong>, a 200-voice choir.</p>
<p>The evening begins with a photo exhibit at the auditorium lobby showcasing the orchestra’s activities since its inception. Three soloists from the orchestra will perform a movement from a concerto: <strong>Jonathan Tapac</strong> in Mendelssohn’s <em>Violin Concert in E minor</em>, <strong>Gilbert Asuque</strong> in Creston’s <em>Marimba Concertino </em>and <strong>Crystal Milarose Rodis </strong>in Chaminade’s <em>Flute Concertino.</em></p>
<p>Koro Filipino joins the MMCO in choral pieces. Interspersed within the program are the two entries to <em>Music Underconstruction V</em>.</p>

<p>The St. Paul University Manila College of Music and the Performing Arts turns 70 this year. A concert series has been lined up for the Diamond Jubilee. Events include:</p>
<p><strong>Mrs. A’s Opus </strong>, a musical tribute to 50 years of piano teaching by <strong>Mrs. Chit Arambulo</strong> featuring <strong>Rowena Arrieta, Ryan Cayabyab, Oliver Salonga, Jonathan Coo, Rica Arambulo, Katherine Fernandez-Asis, Fr. Manoling Francisco, the Greenhills Music Studio Suzuki Music Kids</strong>, including premiere performances of <strong>Ryan Cayabyab </strong>by pianist <strong>Rowena Arrieta.</strong></p>
<p><strong>R &#038; R Duo Piano Concert</strong> featuring <strong>Raul Sunico </strong>and <strong>Rowena Arrieta</strong>. This is a comeback concert of their R &#038; R Duo Piano Concerts of the 1990s.</p>
