Holy Week is a special time each year on DZFE; here’s what’s in store this week.
From Maundy Thursday to Black Saturday, Julia and David man our special program HOMESPUN (Thu 1100-1700, Fri 1530-2000, Sat 800-11), bringing you requests and holiday selections. With David helping out for HOMESPUN, CLASSICAL DRIVE goes on hiatus Thursday and Friday; and we’ve invited Angel (formerly a presenter of CRUISING WITH THE CLASSICS) to pitch in for the MORNING GALLERIES both days.
The Holy Week edition of THE GOOD MEASURE (Fri 1200*, earlier schedule) this year centers on a new work that premiered only this month at the 13th century parish church of St. Mary’s, in the Gloucestershire town of Wotton-under-Edge. A two-year labor of love, Jonathan Crow’s requiem, A Thousand Colors of Sunset looks to the great lyrical requiem settings of the past for inspiration, and to the symbolism of colors to further imbue the music with meaning.
It will be followed by a special Good Friday episode of SING FOR JOY (Fri 1500), sacred music to observe Christ’s unique, atoning death.
In the evening, the nostalgia program REMINISCENCES (Fri 2000) showcases Alfred Newman’s Golden Age film score for the biblical epic, The Greatest Story Ever Told.
Already ongoing, EXPLORING MUSIC (weekdays 1000-1100) delves deep into JS Bach’s St Matthew Passion all this week. CHAMBER MUSIC IN PROGRESS (Tue 2000) revisits Joseph Haydn’s singular commission for the Cadiz Cathedral, The Seven Last Words of Christ. On Black Saturday, DW CONCERT HOUR (Sat 1300) features music from a performance of Beethoven’s oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives.
On Palm Sunday, we launched our new teaching series presented by the late Dr RC Sproul, DUST TO GLORY (Thu 1230), a year-long survey of the Bible which begins this week with Creation.
Join us as we commemorate the death of Christ this week, and look forward to a season of celebrating his Resurrection!
