A Big Picture Weekend on DZFE

Posted on Apr 9, 2022

Works of grandeur and scope, transcendent truths for joy and certainty, lend perspective to life this Holy Week and Easter weekend on DZFE.

EASTER TAPESTRY (Sat 1900-2030, with further airing on Thu 1500-1630) embarks on “Piano Pilgrimages” April 9 to May 21. The first episode is a progress along the Via Crucis with Franz Liszt; also on the program, a sequence of sacred and instrumental works from Martin Luther’s time. DZFE’s Tiffany presents.

Epic portions await on HOMESPUN, DZFE’s annual feast of large-scale works (Maundy Thursday 1030-1500 & 1630-2000, Good Friday 1000-1300,1300-1700, & 1700-2000, Black Saturday 800-1100). DZFE presenters David, Daniel, Julia, and Dawn pitch in to present the six-part program. This year’s roster of requests includes Leo Delibes’ opera Lakmé, the panoramic Má vlast by Bedřich Smetana, plus oratorios—Johann Mattheson’s Joseph and JS Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (in English)!

Two stirring elegies—music with associations to the composer’s parents—feature on this week’s MAESTRO FILIPINO (Thu 1000), guesting Nilo Alcala.

The morning of Good Friday opens with a special episode of SING FOR JOY (Fri 705-735). Tune in for seasonal music performed by the St. Olaf Choir and Cantorei, Oslo Chamber Choir, and The Choir of Palmer Memorial Church.

The 1965 George Stevens’ film The Greatest Story Ever Told is one of two centerpieces on REMINISCENCES with DZFE’s Mario (Fri 2000). To Alfred Newman’s score, the film retells the life and passion of Christ. Also on the program, a sequence of hymns and readings – “Easter — The Story of Holy Week” .

Greet Resurrection Sunday with RISEN (April 17 900-1000 with further airing on April 18 2000-2100), a processional program in majestic organ music and reflections. Hear organist and composer AJ Consolacion II perform music by Phil Lehenbauer, David Bednall, JS Bach, and his own composition. DZFE’s David presents.

Playlists become available on our website as usual, after each third of the broadcast day. Join us in a contemplative celebration of Christ’s cross and resurrection!
