Anniversary updates and valedictions

Posted on May 27, 2022

Anniversaries are a natural time for transitions, and in our 68th Anniversary month of June, a set of changes to our program schedule take effect concomitant with several valedictions taking effect mid-year.

Seven years after presenter and producer Fred Flaxman’s passing in 2015, COMPACT DISCOVERIES is finally concluding its run. The program aired on DZFE in 2009 and introduced classical music treasures from compact discs in a themed one-hour show. The program’s humorous and light-hearted format, plus its imaginative episode titles such as “Discs for Dishwashing”, “Czech This Out!”, and “Bloch-Busters”, testified to Fred Flaxman’s friendly and accessible approach to the classics.

In June, Ptr. Bruce Benson, retires from his long-time role as presenter for the sacred music program SING FOR JOY, which also ends its run on DZFE. First heard on the broadcast in 2010, SING FOR JOY resounds with rousing sacred music performances, harmonized with the church calendar.

The year 2008 saw the first episode of THE CONCERT from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston on the broadcast. Presented by Scott Nickrenz, THE CONCERT was a podcast intended to showcase the performances of the longest-running museum music program in America. Some years after the conclusion of the podcast, the series will also close its time on our broadcast.

CULTURE CAROUSEL with Irene Obligacion goes into hiatus starting this June as its presenter, Ms. Irene Obligacion, takes a break from the broadcast to tend to personal affairs. CULTURE CAROUSEL has been a mainstay of our program roster for over 30 years — first as a program of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and then in the last few years, as a program of DZFE. Stay posted for future updates concerning the program.

After 15 years as a presenter and writer for DZFE, and most recently as the writer of REMINISCENCES, Nathaniel Ong (known to long-time listeners as “John”) retires from our small team of volunteers. Writing and researching as a volunteer, week after week, year after year, is a not a responsibility for the faint of heart, and Nathaniel’s gifts and commitment will be sorely missed and difficult to replace.

Last but certainly not least — and taking effect in September, not this June — DZFE will also be saying farewell to BUSINESS MATTERS with Francis Kong, who has decided to retire the radio program, which is but one of many, many activities and many platforms through which Francis now carries out his vocation as a motivational speaker and consultant. Having begun on DZFE over a quarter century ago, Francis will always have a special place in our story and in the memories of our listeners.

Besides this last item, the updates to our program schedule and roster take effect June 5.

New programs and features also await; these will be announced in separate posts.

Below is the adjusted schedule. (Only major programs are listed. Changes to the schedule of biblical commentary features and vignettes will be reflected on our Talk page from June 5.) For other announcements about DZFE and our programs, follow us on Facebook or Twitter
