“By very virtue of our humanity, we line up either for the kingdom of God or for the kingdom of man, and we are engaged in this battle and in this warfare that is a warfare that is for keeps that has eternal consequences every single day of our lives.” — RC Sproul
Throughout history there have been two kingdoms growing up beside one another: the city of man and the city of God. In this Renewing Your Mind teaching series beginning June 19, Dr. RC Sproul discusses the CITY OF MAN (Sun 2000, Wed 1600, Fri 200), reminding us that all empires built by mankind are doomed to failure and calls us to citizenship in the city of God.
Episodes in this series:
The Shot Heard Around the Universe
Ever since Adam and Eve ate of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, we have been engaged in a cosmic war. The devastation of this war is beyond human comprehension. Famine, sickness, pain, suffering, and death surround us with no end in sight. We are in an ancient war between two cities—One of man and one of God. But is all this necessary over one piece of forbidden fruit?
The City that Cain Built
Where is your city of birth? Is there anyone out there from Enoch—The City of Man? Each place in the world, no matter how small or large, has its own characteristics and customs that contribute to the advancement of that place. Sociologists define this as culture. And to a large degree, that affects who we are, even when we leave that place.
A Monument to Ourselves
Does God hate big cities? Does he hate human progress and unity so much that he topples towers and scatters people who are only trying to live peaceably with one another? We are looking for that self-sufficient city that meets all of our needs. Indeed we want Utopia.
Why do Nations Rage?
What makes God laugh? Riddles? Knock-knock jokes? Or perhaps the evil nations of the earth united in an attempt to overthrow the Kingdom of God?
Choose Your City
The Christian life is often compared to a pilgrimage. Perhaps you have read the classic work from John Bunyan titled, “Pilgrim’s Progress.” In this story, the main character named Christian is on a journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City—the City of Zion. During that journey he encounters worldly distractions and temptations personified. Choices must be made. Every Christian feels the tension of two kingdoms.
