“Te Deum laudamus!” “We praise thee, O God!”
DZFE ushers in the Eastertide with a RESURRECTION SUNDAY PROGRAM (Sun 1000, further airing Easter Mon 2000) featuring two Messiahs — that is, music from two oratorios on the Messiah — the third part of Handel’s famous setting of Scripture text assembled by Charles Jennens; and centrally, the less known Der Messias of Telemann, setting text from the epic poem of that name by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock.
This year’s EASTER TAPESTRY series (Sat 1900, Wed 1300), running six weeks from April 7, revolves on an array of romantic and modern settings of the ancient hymn, the Te Deum — by Mendelssohn, Berlioz, Dvorak, Britten, Pärt. Other works on our Easter Tapestry include James Macmillan’s setting of the biblical Resurrection narrative, Since it was the Day of Preparation; also, Beethoven’s incidental music for King Stephen, symphonies by Bruckner and Rautavaara, among many other works.
