Easter Triduum on DZFE

Posted on Mar 19, 2016

DZFE marks the crux of the year with special programs.

THE HOLINESS OF GOD with RC Sproul continues over the Triduum and into the Easter Season, the episode this holiday (Maundy Thu, 630) centering on the prophet Isaiah’s pivotal encounter with the Holy One of Israel.

HEAVEN HOW I GOT HERE, THE STORY OF THE THIEF ON THE CROSS airs Maundy Thursday and Good Friday (700-800). Actor Stephen Baldwin reads a tale told from the thief’s point of view; the book is written by pastor and teacher Colin Smith, familiar to listeners from the feature Unlocking the Bible.

HOMESPUN, DZFE’s annual marathon request program for the Holy Week holidays, features many large-scale listener requests Maundy Thursday (1000-1500*), Good Friday (1000-1400*) and Black Saturday (800-1100). This year’s roster includes performances of mainstays such as Handel’s Messiah and Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ, as well as newer works such as Rutter’s Requiem and Julia Wolfe’s Anthracite Fields.

THE GOOD MEASURE (Good Friday, 1400) presents two Requiems, the sonorous Officium Defunctorum of Cristobal Morales, as well as Paul Hindemith’s moving Whitman setting When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d.

On Black Saturday, CULTURE CAROUSEL (1200), the program of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, plays excerpts from the oratorio of Lucio San Pedro, The Redeemer.

Morning of Resurrection Sunday, the hosts of WHITE HORSE INN (800) continue their discussion of the Resurrection of Christ, begun earlier this March.

Our BACH CANTATA OF THE WEEK (830) selects one of several cantatas by Bach for the Resurrection season, the Cantata 66 “Erfreut euch, ihr Herzen” (Rejoice, you hearts).

And finally, DZFE’s special Resurrection Day program (1100*) centers on Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2 “Hymn of Praise” (further airs Easter Mon, 2000, preempting FAVORITES).

*Late morning programs (1000-1200) Maundy Thursday and Good Friday move up to earlier in the morning (800-1000). DZFE’s Resurrection Day program preempts COMPACT DISCOVERIES.
