Following the conclusion of the summertime “Shakespeare Smorgasbord”, OPERAphile (Sat, 1900) continues the series “Ghostly Apparitions—Death and Redemption”, which saw P.I. Tchaikovsky’s “Pique Dame”, Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” and Richard Wagner’s “Die fliegende Holländer” featured last year.
On May 18, Part 2 begins with Giuseppe Verdi’s early opera “Macbeth” (1847) in two parts; the second program also offers glimpses of Dmitri Shostakovich’s controversial “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” (1934). Following are Erich Korngold’s decadently romantic “Die tote Stadt” (1920), composed when Korngold was only 23; and then Benjamin Britten’s “The Turn of the Screw” (1954).
OPERAphile is produced and hosted by soprano Joanna Go.
