For the current series on OPERAPHILE (Sat 1900, Thu 000), Joanna Go turns to the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a literary giant who inspired a whole generation of Romantic composers. The themes of his works continue to resonate even in the 21st century. The series focuses on how French composers have adapted this German giant’s masterpieces for the operatic stage, hence the title of this series: Goethe Gone Gallic. We’ll hear three operas over the next five weeks — Hector Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust, Ambroise Thomas’ Mignon, and Jules Massenet’s Werther.
