Together with the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines, DZFE brings Spanish music to our audience through the series SPANISH OVERTONES, specially produced for DZFE by Ibidem Radio in Spain, through the patronage of OHL. SPANISH OVERTONES airs thrice each week on DZFE (Tue 1200 / Fri 000 / Sun 2100).

Spanish music has a long and colorful heritage, a product of three cultures—Arab, Jewish and Christian—that coexisted in Spanish history. After an illuminating Renaissance, there followed an intimate, afflicted Baroque and joyful Rococo era. A dissipated Classicism gave way to a flourishing of nationalistic identity. What emerged was a blend of essences—an intense, authentic character embodied by Sancho Panza’s declaration in Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote, “Where there is music, there can be no evil.”

SPANISH OVERTONES debuts on DZFE on September 20 and will run for five months, featuring a kaleidoscopic repertoire that includes Spanish early music, Baroque melodies and cantatas, music for the stage, zarzuela, pieces for the Spanish guitar,  organ and romantic piano works, selections from Renaissance song books, chamber music, 19th century songs and symphonies, 20th century sonatas as well as film and contemporary music.  A part of the lineup is dedicated to Lamentations chanted during the Holy Week.

Ballads will also be played as a special tribute to the great literary master Miguel de Cervantes, whose 400th death anniversary is celebrated this year. Listeners will likewise be mesmerized by the charm of Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados.

SPANISH OVERTONES is a production of the recently-created Ibídem Radio, dedicated to Spanish classical music from all eras and the exchange of knowledge and awareness of authors and performers, in order to recover the Spanish musical heritage and discover new creations. Ibídem Radio aims to be a curator for this passionate exchange of music.
